Is it True That Women Are Worse Drivers?
When you’re looking for delivery or removal companies, you will often hear the phrase ‘Man in a Van,’ but very rarely do you hear the phrase ‘Woman in a Van.’ The majority of couriers do indeed tend to be men, so is it just a gender specific kind of job preferred mainly by males, or is it simply as many chauvinists would assert, that men are simply better drivers and therefore you want a delivery driver you can trust.
Unfortunately for those who decry this kind of stereotyping, both might well be true. On the whole, many men enjoy driving more than some women and therefore will indeed be attracted to the idea of a life on the road much more than most women. But is there a reverse sexism going on in believing that men simply like the road due to some testosterone filled need for speed and danger?
Studies have shown that the reason men may enjoy driving more, and why they are also likely to be better at it, is because they have much better navigation and special awareness than women. Women tend to rely on local landmarks to get around, so in familiar areas they may actually be just as competent as, or maybe even more so, than the men. On longer journeys in unfamiliar territory though, there is the potential for them to come unstuck.
So when it comes to jobs as European couriers, men will feel much more comfortable travelling in completely unfamiliar places, and will therefore be more likely to enjoy that type of vocation.
Some stereotypes, it appears, have basis. So, ladies, next time a man tells you that men are better drivers than women you can actually agree and tell them that it’s all genetics, then just sit back, relax and let him do all the driving.
